What is Elder Care?

Posted in Assisted Living, Elder Care at 4:07 pm by admin

Elder Care or Elderly Care is about the issues and concerns that an elderly person goes through as their body begins to become weak and frail. Elderly people over 65 begin to fall into this category at around a percentile of 5% of those aged over 65.

There are about 16% of those living in the US that fall into the elderly who need that extra bit of care because of their frail disposition.

When someone becomes frail they begin to not be able to do some of the things that were actually quite easy before they came into this weak state of being. There are 6 activities of daily living that an elderly person becomes unable to do without the assistance of a care giver.

These ADL’s include:

  • bathing
  • dressing
  • grooming
  • eating
  • transferring
  • toileting

This group of people in the United States uses most of the healthcare resources and because of this there becomes a great need for nursing homes, care givers and assisted living type facilities.

Although most of the care provided to the elderly is by their families it eventually becomes quite burdensome and time consuming if your elderly loved one needs consistent around the clock care. Because of this some type of elder care is recommended to alleviate the stress on a household.
