Continuing Care is a type of elderly care designed to help senior citizens make just one housing decision that will last for years to come. Here is why this is necessary. Think about what happens when a senior who lives in a retirement facility has something unexpected happen to them. For instance, what happens if they are diagnosed with a disease that will require medical help on a regular basis? Or what if they take a fall, break their hip, and now need help getting dressed in the morning? Typical retirement communities have no provisions for these unexpected events. They are built to let seniors live independently.

Similarly, Assisted Living communities are meant for seniors need help with basic activities for daily life, but not full time medical attention by nurses. But as anyone who has ever been through such trials knows, the health of a senior is a tenuous thing. It can all change very quickly.
[ad#ad-1]

In the past, when elderly care was synonymous with skilled nursing (what a narrow definition!), all varieties of seniors from the healthy to the terminally ill were often housed together. That took care of this concern on one level: patients already had full time nurses patrolling the halls, after all. But today (thankfully), the situation has changed. How can a man who lives in a condo on a golf retirement community get help bathing every morning after he breaks his leg?

Understanding Continuing Care Communities

Continuing Care Communities are facilities that offer adaptable levels of care. Patients can be comfortable making one elderly care decision with one company. There is no need to end a contract, move their belongings to a different part of the city, and sign a new care contract at a new facility. And seeing as those changes usually need to happen during times of crisis, that can be a massive relief for everyone involved.

Here is how it works. When a senior finds a multi level continuing care community, they can sign a contract with that company that will either last for a defined period of time, covering any needed types of care, or can last for the remainder of the patient’s life. The services offered are generally right there on the same physical facility, but sometimes the nursing home facility is offsite. But either way, the principle is the same: the resident is dealing with the same company which adapts to their own unique needs. So when it’s time to move into different housing, everything is still very much in order. No reason to panic.

The best thing about Continuing Care Communities is the “community” aspect. Residents are more like members of a club then they are patients. There are social events planned in house, and there is transportation available for social outings offsite. Residents can eat together (assisted living, in most cases, offers three meals per day), and do life together. In this way, they are not alone, wasting away in isolation. They are surrounded by friends, and they have a support system already in place.

Does continuing care sound like the right type of housing for your aging loved one? Use the gray box at the top of this page to find facilities near your city. It will help you find TX Assisted Living facilities, as well as senior housing from all around the United States and Canada.

Today, Assisted Living communities are immensely popular, and there are thousands of them all around the United States. By now, you probably know what they are all about, especially if you read articles on this site often. In a nutshell: Assisted Living facilities are designed for senior adults who do not need full time care, but could really use a helping hand with some important daily activities. This can include housework, medicine, transportation, and bathing, among other things. These facilities are not nursing homes, but they are not quite retirement centers either. They can be a wonderful sort of middle of the road senior care option. But for many seniors, this option can still be something close to terrifying. Moving into an Assisted Living facility requires them to leave home, pack up their belongings, and never come back. It is a big risk, on a personal level: relationally and financially. There is a lot riding on the decision.

Temporary Assisted Living: A Low Risk Option

[ad#ad-1]

But seniors do not need to hedge all their bets on this decision. Today, there are many places that let seniors “test drive” a facility before committing to it long term. They can move in for a couple of days to a month. If they hate it, there is no harm, no foul. There is no obligation.

But it usually will not take a month to decide if the facility is a good fit for them. Many will know in their gut very early on whether the emenities are to their liking. They will get a feel for the clientelle. They will understand if these are people they could be friends with. They will understand whether the level of medical care is appropriate to their unique situation. And, most importantly, they will know if this is a place they can spend the rest of their life.

This low risk option has become common for many facilities today. If you are facing the possiblity of a move to an Assisted Living facility, ask them if they would allow you to stay temporarily before you agree to stay long term. Most facilities will be accomodating.

An Assisted Living Vacation?

Here is an interesting option. Some Facilities even open up their doors to seniors who are travelling, like a senior hotel. So, if you live in Florida, and your mom lives in Utah, she could stay in an assisted living FL facility. Or maybe they are coming from Texas, and you live in the Pacific Northwest. They could stay in an Oregon Assisted Living home. It’s a comfy environment anyway. If she enjoys staying the weekend there, who knows? Maybe she could live there down the road!

One facility that is well known for doing this is Atria Assisted Living Communities, but there are others. These communities understand that if they make a good impression on the traveler, there is a good chance that they might end up paying good money to live there some day. So if nothing else, you can count on the vacation being a very comfortable one.

No matter how it works out, just know that this option is a tremendous opportunity for a senior adult who is almost ready to take the plunge. If that is you, your mother or father, you might seriously consider the temporary assisted living option before you sign on. After all, you wouldn’t buy a car before taking a test drive, would you?

Texas Poorly Run Nursing Homes

Taylor Care Center in Taylor Texas made the list as one of the worst nursing homes in the state. What a terrible report for Taylor Care for it to come to the state posting them in a shame list on a government website. It just doesn’t get much worse then this. Hopefully Texas will start doing this to poorly run Assisted Living facilities in Texas as well.

The Shame List

Basically what is going on is the Texas state government will be posting on their medicaid and medicare website the nursing homes in Texas that have received the most complaints and infractions by state regulators as a way to shame them for their poor elder care performance. Unfortunately the fines that the state charges the state of Texas elder care facilities is like a slap on the wrist in comparison to the profit they make per resident in these facilties. Care workers in Texas facilities make about 60 cents for every depends diaper they change and every person they shower. Think about this, would you feel happy about your job if you were paid 60 cents for changing a depends diaper? For one thing it smells, you are putting yourself at some health risks and you are dealing with people who can become combative if they have any type of elderly disease like alzhiemers or dimentia. 60 cents per shower and diaper is just not enough to keep quality care workers in a facility to insure no one becomes neglected or abused. Also bare in mind, if the facility has 2 care workers for every 60 residents how are they even able to care for these people. There are elder care facilities that keep a permanent skeleton staff like this so management receives their bonus while the residents suffer and their kids watch their parents savings deplete because of it going to a poorly run elder care facility.

Don’t Waste Your Parents Money On A Bad Facility

It would be better to have a helper you pay come to the house and watch your loved one then put them into some of these facilities. Hopefully the government will consider placing a shame report for assisted living facilities in Texas who have repeated violations. Atria Willow Park as well as Atria Copeland both have multiple and repeated violations with the department of aging and any loving child of an elderly parent should not even consider placing their parent in these facilities.
